Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism–Features

Named for the renowned science writer of The New York Times, the first Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism was presented to Sullivan in 1989. Effective in 2000, it has been recast as an award for science feature writing, defined as work prepared with a deadline of more than one week.

Frequency:

Presented to one awardee (individual or group of four people) annually.

Citation/Scope Statement:

For excellence in researching and reporting a feature story that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • brings new information or concepts about AGU sciences to the public's attention,
  • identifies and corrects misconceptions about AGU sciences, or
  • makes AGU sciences accessible and interesting to general audiences, without sacrificing accuracy.

Physical Description:

  • Presentation piece description: plaque (which often goes to the media outlet) and framed certificate.
