The daily mean concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, hit 400.03 parts per million (ppm) on 9 May, marking the first time the concentration there has topped 400 ppm since measurements began in 1958.

The Obama administration’s proposed fiscal year 2014 budget for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would boost funding for a number of the agency’s program areas. A significant exception is the NOAA education program.

AGU welcomes The Trembling Earth, a new seismology blog where you’ll find periodic musings on seismological advances as well as media that unveil and illuminate the phenomenon of earthquakes. The blog is written by Austin Elliott, a PhD candidate in earthquake geology at the University of California Davis, who has been studying earthquakes since the age of thirteen.
