The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) operates a number of moored buoys and fixed coastal stations around the continental United States and the western Pacific Islands to provide marine weather observations for short and long term forecasting. NDBC has recognized the increasing need for long term, continuous data in environmentally sensitive regions of the marine environment and is expanding its operational capabilities for collection of oceanographic data. NDBC presently collects oceanographic data in the Florida Keys in cooperation with the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, ADCP data in the Southern California Bight for Minerals and Management, and is developing an operational capability for ocean optics
