1. Discover the latest in Earth and space sciences

Around 1,500 scientists are expected to present new findings in the Earth and space sciences in Cancún at the 2013 Meeting of the Americas. Organizers of the meeting, which takes place 14-17 May, are planning scientific sessions on such subjects as the 2012 Costa Rica earthquake, the Chicxulub impact crater, natural hazard monitoring in the Caribbean, new solar exploration missions and much more. All scientific sessions take place in the Cancún Center, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

The meeting will bring together researchers from the American Geophysical Union and more than a dozen other Mexican and international scientific societies, which are listed at http://moa.agu.org/2013/general-information/.

AGU will not operate a Press Room at the meeting. However, the online Media Center for the 2013 Meeting of the Americas (http://moa.agu.org/2013/media/) will feature a Virtual Press Room, which will include press releases, images, video and more about newsworthy research presented at the meeting. The Virtual Press Room will become available on the meeting’s Media Center site by late April.

2. 2013 Meeting of the Americas registration information

News Media registrants receive, at no charge, a badge that provides access to all scientific sessions of the meeting. Eligibility for press registration is limited to science reporters, freelancers and public information officers.

For a complete description of eligibility criteria, and to register for the meeting, visit:

http://moa.agu.org/2013/media/press-registration/

All press badges will be issued solely at the discretion of the AGU Public Information Office.

Friday, 26 April is the last day for online press pre-registration, which assures that your badge will be waiting for you when you arrive. You may also register at the meeting; however, you must bring valid media credentials to do so (see eligibility criteria at the link above).

3. Hotel booking now open

Press registrants may reserve rooms at three hotels in Cancun with special meeting rates. For more information and to book a room, please visit: http://moa.agu.org/2013/travel-housing/hotels/.

4. Mexican visa regulations for international reporters

International reporters, including those from the United States, must have a valid passport to enter Mexico. Those without an up-to-date passport are urged to apply for one immediately. Passport information for U.S. citizens may be found at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/.

Journalists who are U.S. citizens, or have a valid U.S. visa, do not need a special visa to report from the meeting, as long as they are staying less than 180 days and not being paid by a Mexican company. However, camera operators bringing gear into Mexico should fill out a specific form; please email [email protected] for more information.

International reporters from countries other than the United States should contact their country’s Mexican embassy (http://www.sre.gob.mx/index.php/representaciones/embajadas-de-mexico-en-el-exterior) to inquire about possible visa requirements.
